Who Gives A Crap? Toilet options.

Hi guys, todays post is a little different. Being eco-friendly can be found in places you might not have expected, and one of these is the toilet! I’m going to highlight some of the more sustainable options available, and tell you about my favourite.

Bidet: A bidet, or bidet attachment is arguably the most sustainable option as it is zero waste, and over time a cheaper alternative to traditional paper. A bidet attachment may cost anywhere between £30 and £100, so is worth looking into if its something you are interested in. A bidet works by a high pressure nozzle that spray’s water to clean you, rather than wiping. Although not proven, it is thought to be gentler and more hygienic than wiping.

Re-useable cloths: Another ‘zero-waste’ method, having reusable cloths that you use and then wash has started to become an option. Either DIY or buy specially made by sellers (try Etsy) the idea is that the cloths provide a more natural option to traditional paper. Whilst it does prevent waste from paper production and associated risks of deforestation, the need to wash cloths at high temperatures and potentially bleach adds a high water footprint that means it may not be the best option.

Sustainable paper: The most common alternative, is traditional toilet paper made and packaged with more sustainable materials. This can be more expensive, although usually is the cost equivalent to branded papers such as Andrex. Definitely the easiest swap, as they operate the same as there traditional counterparts, just with the added bonus of not costing the earth!

My favourite option for sustainable paper is Who Gives A Crap. Not only is the paper affordable, it is high quality and comes delivered to your door in plastic free paper. I have my uni house on it, and its so handy because it means we aren’t constantly buying small packs of toilet rolls and arguing about who’s turn it is to buy. My family have also moved to who gives a crap, although they prefer the bamboo premium paper rather than the standard recycled paper rolls. Personally, I think both are great.

Another reason I love who gives a crap is that they donate 50% of the profits to build toilets and proper sanitation for those who need it. So far, they have donated over $8.3 million AUD. I like that something as boring as going to the loo is making a difference for the earth and the people on it. Honestly, my friends are fed up with hearing how much I love this company, so for their sake, I’m going to stop talking now.

I hope this post has helped you think about the little things in sustainability, and hopefully encouraged you to try an alternative!

Love, Abi

  1. Who gives a crap toilet roll is a great environmentally friendly option delivered to your door (we stirred a large box in the attic) and top up x
